The way the process usually works is that I give Dark Horse a bunch of ideas when and if I have a synopsis of the story. Sometimes it’s too close to the main cover or they want something different represented, but I usually give them a bunch of ideas.

Setting up the drawing with the main figures and the background. Perspective lines keep everything consistent and give the illusion of depth. 
Filling in the details of the Fifth Element inspired city below. 
Now detailing the high skyscrapers in the background as well as Fray’s gun and hair. 
More details added to Buffy and the car hovering beneath. 
Penciling is finished. Now it’s ready for the inks.
