Bishop: The Last X-Man, a retrospective (part 1)

My first professional work at Marvel was Bishop The Last X-Man. This was the character’s first solo title and my first regular monthly comic book. Up to that point, I was doing fill-in issues for Green Lantern, Superboy, and Superman.

This Bishop comic book series ran from October 1999 through January 2001 and was very underrated at the time. Writer Joe Harris had a Lord of the Rings type of story in mind for the mutant from the future. So for most of its 16-issue run, Bishop finds himself in an alternate reality where the Earth resembles the middle ages with a fantasy twist: primitive villages and clans have replaced cities, the fight for survival has replaced law and order… civilization as we know it has fallen! And, yes, there are sorcerers and dragons.

Alone and confused, Bishop must stop his frequent nemesis Fitzroy — the man who brought Bishop to this world — from becoming its ruler! But who are the strange children that inhabit this world and seem to possess mutant powers? What do they want of Bishop? And, more importantly, why do they wear the familiar mutant “M” marking over their eyes?

If you’re a fan of fantasy I suggest tracking down these old issue as it has never been presented in trade paperback or any collected form. And you can only fine issues 3, 15, and 16 digitally (Comixology; Marvel Unlimited).

I did the covers and interior pencils for all issues, except for #16 where I just did the cover. A gallery of some my pencils, interior art, and covers from this series is below.

Only guess is that it had fallen of off Marvel’s radar. Maybe one day if/when Bishop gets introduced in the MCU. Three issues of this series are available digitally but that is probably because the stories were part of major crossovers.

This was the series where I first discovered your artwork and became a fan. Your pencils brought the story to life. For me, you did the definitive Bishop!
