Strangely Enough [JUNE 2017]

Welcome to the Summer of 2017! Hopefully, you will have time to hit the beach, cookout, go to amusement parks and so on. If you got to stick around and work hard for the money … then that’s cool, too. But if you find yourself able to attend HeroesCon, Denver Comic Con, Florida Super Con, Raleigh Supercon or DragonCon — those will be my Summer 2017 shows — so please stop by my table and say hello.

Also, I would like to thank all who entered the Buffy Coloring Contest. The contest closed on Monday, June 5th and we are now reviewing entries. The winner will be announced during Denver Comic Con weekend (June 30 – July 2) probably on that Sunday because that tends to be a less busy day. We’re going to try to video our reviews of the entries and post it to the KabaLounge website and social media.

After Denver Comic Con ends, July 5th marks the return of comic book property that’s close and dear to me: The American Way. As you know John Ridley and I worked on the original comic book mini-series in 2006. Since then, John has continued his success in Hollywood, winning an Academy Award for ’12 Years a Slave’ and is the creator/ showrunner of the critically acclaimed anthology series ‘American Crime.’

It’s an honor to reunite with John to bring you the next chapter of the New American as he tries to keep communities safe amid the social turmoil of the 1970s. I’ve included a few preview pages below. Enjoy and hope to see you around this Summer!

Happy 20th Anniversary Buffy

Today marks the 20th Anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s television debut as Buffy Summers set out to change the world and empowered others to do the same. These days, those adventures continue in the world of comic books and graphic novels that myself and other talented artists have the honor of being a part of.

Thank you Joss Whedon for being the pioneer that held on to your vision as this creation was brought to the TV screen and Sarah, Alyson, Nicholas, David, Anthony, James and other contributors who brought those heroes to life. Happy 20th Anniversary Buffy!

Gojira/Godzilla v Gamera

Have you ever wondered what would happen in a Godzilla V Gamera face-off? Having gone to G-Fest a few weekends ago and seeing the new King Kong movie trailer has got me feeling nostalgic… so I had to dig up these few pages I completed years ago. These were just for fun and not part of any official project.

One of the things I love about Gojira/Godzilla is that he can play either protagonist or antagonist depending on what side of the volcano he wakes up on. On this day, he’s clearly the heel for our Guardian of the Universe and friend to all children, Gamera. We can only imagine of the climactic battle that takes place after page 5. Maybe we’ll see it someday.

Enjoy:)

New Serenity comic book mini-series announced at SDCC!

Who’s #1? This guy! Been working on this for quite some time but now the official word is out at SDCC. Look for Serenity: No Power in the ‘Verse #1 to be released on October 26, 2016. ‘Verse is a new six-issue mini-series written by Chris Roberson and drawn by yours truly. The publisher is Dark Horse Comics, of course.

Entertainment Weekly was one of the news sources to break the story.

Here’s Serenity!

Since August, Dark Horse Comics has been teasing about the future of Joss Whedon’s Firefly/Serenity franchise on their website.  Rumors abound as everyone speculated that a new comic book was in the works, but who is the creative team?

Yesterday, Comic Book Resources reported that a new “Serenity” comic book is currently in the works with Georges at the art helm… the identity of the writer remains a secret for now.

This new comic book series will pick-up right where the movie left off, with Mal and crew still struggling through the shocking loss of friends Wash and Book, plus the fallout from exposing The Alliance as the creators of the Reavers — the scourge of the universe.

In the meantime, enjoy these exclusive images CBR posted yesterday on their website and stay tuned to the KabaLounge website and social networks as more information become available.

Buffy gives me butterflies!

Has it been 6 years already?

I started drawing “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” in the fall of 2006.  Little did I know how this title, nay, this ‘verse, would consume my life… and I couldn’t be happier.  Even though at the time, there were many outside of Dark Horse who cautioned me about “derailing” my career to do a non-superhero book.

Buffy came into my life quite  by chance.  I wasn’t a fan.  I had never watched the show, and yet I got an email from the powers-that-be saying Joss Whedon really likes my work and wants me to draw this book.  Like the road less traveled,  I took the title fully expecting to only do about 4 or 5 issues and that would be that.  Instead, Buffy became a part of my life and I took my first step into a much larger world!

“Season 8” was a huge learning curve for me as an artist and then later as a Buffy fan.  If I was going to draw them, I had to get to know these characters inside and out, never once did I expect to fall in love with them.  I took the job as an assignment, but somewhere along the way, it became a labor of love.

When “Season 9” came around, Joss and I had a conversation that was part “What do you think?” and part “Do you want to come back?”.  In this day and age of 1 to 4 issue commitments, maybe he was a little cautious of having an artist staying so long on a book, but he needn’t have worried.  I answered with a question of my own. “Are you coming back?” “Yes!” was his answer.  And that was it for me.  I was in for another tour of duty.

Where as “Season 8” was vast, chaotic and a little scattered, “Season 9” was more streamlined.  In the history of the Buffy mythology, I think Seasons 8 and 9 stand up to anything from the TV show’s seasons 1-7.  They’re strong, gutsy and the characters grow.  Boy did they grow!  I have the distinction of drawing scenes of these characters that will be remembered forever.  It was exciting, and I’m eternally grateful.  By the way, all of those television episodes (even the Angel ones) are now part of my personal collection.

Sometimes, at conventions, people will ask me do I think it’s going to hurt my career always being associated with Buffy and not, say X-Men or Batman?  And with a sheepish grin, I always say that if Buffy is the only thing that I’m known for, after a hopefully long career run, then I have had a great career.  I don’t ever expect to stray too far from Buffy.  I believe she’ll always be a part of my life personally and professionally.

When I started this book 6 years ago, I felt this electric feeling in my belly all through “Season 8”.  I thought it was just nerves.  That feeling continued over the years, and towards the end of “Season 9” I was getting those feelings again.  It wasn’t until I finished this season that I figured out what that feeling was.  Butterflies.

Buffy gives me butterflies.

And that, my friends, makes all the difference!

Joker’s Daughter teased in DC Comics backstory!

In this week’s DC Comics backstory feature, Channel 52, we got a glimpse of their 52 version of the Joker’s Daughter.  Georges is currently working on pencils for her debut story, in Batman: The Dark Knight #23.4.

See this new villain in all her ‘gory’, when she makes her first appearance during the Villain’s Month story arc that will rip through the DC Universe this fall.

Want a peek at what’s to come?  Check out this character design Bob Harras posted on DC’s website sometime ago.
